Blewit Mushroom Lepista nuda, edible cold-weather mushroom for home growing, culinary use, and forest gardens
Lepista nuda, commonly known as the blewit mushroom, is a highly regarded edible mushroom with beautiful lilac to violet coloring and a rich, earthy flavor. This cold-tolerant species is native to temperate forests and grassy areas and is widely appreciated by foragers, chefs, and mushroom growers. It is often found in the fall after the first frost and is known for its strong resistance to cool temperatures, making it an excellent choice for late-season mushroom production.
Blewit mushrooms produce dense, dome-shaped caps that range in color from pale purple to lavender, along with thick white stems and soft, creamy gills. They are well-suited for cultivation on compost, leaf litter, hardwood chips, and straw-based substrates. Blewits are delicious when sautéed, roasted, or added to pastas, stews, and other savory dishes.
