Hypsizygus tessulatus is a well recognized member of the family Lyophyllaceae, known for its pale caps, slender stems, and dense clustered form. The name Shimeji is widely associated with members of Hypsizygus, while Japanese references commonly distinguish white and brown forms under the names Bunashimeji and Bunapi. The taxon has also appeared under the name Hypsizygus marmoreus in older literature, creating an important nomenclatural connection between references to White Shimeji and earlier classifications. Its place within Hypsizygus, along with its distinctive clustered appearance and long history in East Asian mycological literature, makes it a particularly recognizable member of the genus.
