Laccaria laccata is the type species of the genus Laccaria and is classified in the family Hydnangiaceae within the order Agaricales. Its common name, The Deceiver, comes from its remarkable variability, with coloration changing considerably according to age and moisture. The current name was established by Mordecai Cubitt Cooke in 1884 after Giovanni Antonio Scopoli originally described the taxon as Agaricus laccatus in 1772. Clitocybe laccata is another historical name encountered in older references, making these synonyms useful when tracing older field guides, herbarium records, and mycological literature.
