Saffron Milkcap Mushroom

Lactarius deliciosus

10 cc/mL liquid culture

Lactarius deliciosus belongs to the family Russulaceae within the order Russulales and has one of the longer naming histories among the familiar milkcaps. Carl Linnaeus originally described it in 1753 as Agaricus deliciosus, before Samuel Frederick Gray transferred it to Lactarius in 1821. Historical literature also includes the names Galorrheus deliciosus and Lactifluus deliciosus. The taxon is associated with the Lactarius section Deliciosi, a group recognized for orange to reddish latex and close associations with conifer hosts. Its common names include Saffron Milkcap, Red Pine Mushroom, and Delicious Milkcap, with regional names such as níscalo, rovelló, and pinetell appearing throughout European literature.
