Sarcomyxa serotina is a distinctive late season member of the family Sarcomyxaceae, recognized for olive, violet, and purplish brown coloration that contrasts with its pale yellow to yellowish gills. The genus Sarcomyxa was separated from Panellus in modern taxonomic treatments, giving this taxon an interesting place in the changing classification of pleurotoid forms. It is also known by names including Late Fall Oyster and Olive Oyster, while the name Mukitake is especially associated with Japanese mycological and culinary traditions. Its cool season appearance and unusual coloration make S. serotina a particularly distinctive representative of its genus.
