Orange Peel Cup Mushroom

Aleuria aurantia

10 cc/mL liquid culture

Aleuria aurantia belongs to the family Pyronemataceae in the order Pezizales, placing it among the cup shaped Ascomycota rather than the more familiar gilled forms. The current name was established by Leopold Fuckel in 1870, while Christiaan Hendrik Persoon originally described it as Peziza aurantia. Older references may also use Scodellina aurantia or Otidea aurantia, giving this taxon an unusually useful trail of historical names for searching older European mycological literature. The epithet aurantia is derived from Latin for orange, while the common name Orange Peel Fungus reflects the resemblance of its vivid cups to pieces of orange peel.
