Hericium erinaceus is the type species of the genus Hericium and belongs to the family Hericiaceae within the order Russulales. The name is shared with several closely related Hericium taxa, including H. americanum and H. coralloides, which are sometimes confused with it in older references. The species has also accumulated a substantial body of taxonomic, ecological, and historical literature, making Hericium erinaceus a useful reference point for comparative work involving the genus. Its distinctive hanging spine structure is also reflected in older common names such as Bearded Tooth and Pom Pom.
