Giant Puffball Mushroom
Calvatia gigantea
10 cc/mL liquid culture
Calvatia gigantea is one of the most extensively renamed puffballs in mycological literature. Its current name can be traced through earlier combinations including Lycoperdon giganteum, Bovista gigantea, Globaria gigantea, Langermannia gigantea, and Lasiosphaera gigantea. These historical names reflect changes in puffball classification as the genus Calvatia became more clearly separated from other gasteroid groups. The species is placed in the family Lycoperdaceae and order Agaricales, and its enclosed internal fertile structure is characteristic of the puffball type rather than the exposed gilled form seen in many other Agaricales.
