Pholiota adiposa belongs to the family Strophariaceae and the genus Pholiota, a group recognized for its long and complex taxonomic history. The name has appeared in earlier literature under Agaricus adiposus, Dryophila adiposa, and Hypodendrum adiposum, making those names useful references when researching older mycological records. It is also known by the common names Cinnamon Cap and Fat Pholiota. Modern studies of Pholiota have used both morphological examination and ITS sequence analysis to separate closely related taxa, with P. adiposa forming part of a particularly challenging group that includes closely similar members of the Pholiota adiposa complex.
