Hypsizygus tessulatus belongs to the family Lyophyllaceae and is closely associated with the common names Brown Shimeji and Buna Shimeji. The name Hypsizygus tessulatus is especially useful when searching older and newer references because this taxon has appeared under different names in commercial and mycological literature, including Hypsizygus marmoreus. It is distinct from Hypsizygus ulmarius, another well known member of the genus, making the two names important reference points when comparing Hypsizygus taxa.
