Australian Morel Mushroom
Morchella australiana
10 cc/mL liquid culture
Morchella australiana is an Australian member of the family Morchellaceae and belongs to the Morchella elata group, a closely related group that has undergone extensive taxonomic revision using molecular phylogenetics. First formally described from material collected in New South Wales and Victoria, it was recognized as a distinct lineage rather than simply another geographic form of a previously named morel. The original research also found that it differs from several introduced Australian Morchella found in post fire areas, making its natural history particularly relevant to comparative studies of Australian morels. Its classification within the order Pezizales and the genus Morchella provides additional reference points for researching Southern Hemisphere morel diversity.
